Elizabeth Warner Marvin Community House Inc
Since 1951 this home at 2 West Fifth Street has been a meeting place for local groups. We still keep that work going. We are also adding classes in photo and video editing, content creation, and simple AI tools so neighbors can learn skills that lead to new work.
Our story
Elizabeth Warner Marvin was born in Jamestown in 1866. She and Robert Marvin moved into this house in 1898. The home was designed by E. G. W. Dietrich in the shingle style. It mixes Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and Eastlake details and is known as one of the finest houses of its kind in Chautauqua County.
Elizabeth wanted a private meeting place for women doing literary, musical, educational, patriotic, scientific, or historical work. After she died in 1950, local women signed a charter. In 1951 about 400 women became charter members of the Elizabeth Warner Marvin Community House. The house is still used for meetings, tours, small events, and community programs.
Mission and vision
These statements are written for the work we do now: care for the historic house, host community groups, and teach practical digital skills.
We care for the Elizabeth Warner Marvin Community House and keep it open as a meeting place for community groups in Jamestown. We also teach photo editing, video editing, content creation, and everyday AI tools so local people can learn skills that help them find work and share their stories.
We want the Marvin House to stay a useful, well-kept landmark. We also want neighbors of every age to have a nearby place to learn digital skills that open new career paths in Jamestown and Chautauqua County.
What we do
Our regular work has not changed. The digital skills program is added on top of tours, rentals, and meetings.
Women’s groups and other community organizations use the house for meetings and programs, as Elizabeth Marvin intended.
Walk through the historic rooms. Self-guided visits are open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Groups and buses can book other times.
The house is not a banquet hall. It works well for showers, meetings, and gatherings of about 70 guests or fewer. Four-hour rentals start at $300 and include tables, chairs, tableware, and Wi-Fi.
New program
Classes will be held at the house. They are meant for beginners and for people who want a second skill. No jargon. Just tools people use at work today.
Crop, color, and clean photos for websites, shops, and social posts.
Cut clips, add titles, and export short videos for events, work, and local news.
Plan posts, write simple copy, and make flyers and graphics people can actually use.
Use everyday AI tools to draft text, make images for practice, and speed up office tasks.
Visit
There is no required ticket for a weekday self-guided tour. Donations help keep the building in good repair. We accept cash, check, card, and Venmo.

Past local support has come from members and from area foundations such as the Lenna Foundation, the Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, and the Hultquist Foundation.
Future partners
We are applying to these nonprofit programs so students and staff can learn on the same software used in many workplaces. Every partnership below is in progress. None is confirmed yet.
